A manager at Brown’s Food Company allegedly assembled female workers to find out who threw a used sanitary towel in the wrong bin
A member of the Ghana Civil Society Platform on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), Archibald Adams says the group will not relent in its effort to ensure that all taxes on sanitary products are removed.
According to him, the current taxes on the products make it difficult for some ladies to afford them since it increased the price of the item.
“We’ll not rest, we will continue to push and we are hopeful that eventually, we will not have any taxes on sanitary pads whether imported or locally manufactured,” he said on JoyFM’s Newsnight.
Early on Wednesday, the Finance Minister announced a zero rate VAT on locally manufactured sanitary pads. He also announced the granting of import duty waivers for raw materials for the local manufacture of sanitary pads.
On the back of this, Mr Adam said although they did not get the tax exemption on all sanitary pads, they are appreciative that the government has taken the first initiative to remove taxes on locally manufactured products.
Again, he said his outfit will on Friday hold a crunch meeting with the four local companies producing pads to review what can be done to increased their capacity to produce more.
He stressed that the removal of the taxes will make a difference as the price of the sanitary towels will reduce thereby making it affordable for all classes of women and girls.
Meanwhile, he said they were in talks with the Ghana Standards Authority to develop a standard price line to guide producers of reusable pads.
“We are looking at it in two ways. We are welcoming this news, we will continue to engage but then also will be ensuring that quality is achieved.”
