The new patriotic party on the 31st of August 2022, remembered their founding fathers and leaders. The day happens to be the 52nd anniversary of His Excellency Mr. Edward Akufo-Addo, of blessed memory. According to history, his tenure of office started on August 31, 1970, as the first and, as it turned out, the last President of the Second Republic. The current secretary of the party gave his speech at the gathering to appreciate the good work of their founding fathers.

Nana Chairman, this is the voice of a man who may be referred to be a “law man,” a highly esteemed attorney, and a judge at the highest level of the legal system, yet he is warning us against taking a legalistic stance on every issue that affects us. Ladies and gentlemen, let me emphasize that I share the late President’s caution as the head of Ghana’s largest political party. Therefore, I humbly ask that everyone in the family always think about what will be best for the group, even if it means sacrificing personal or individual interests. My opinion is that our individual and collective welfare can be found in the general interest and advancement of the party. There are some issues that can be settled amicably if we put the party’s goals and the greater good first. The need for amicable solutions to our challenges in the party is more crucial now than ever, given the herculean task of our commitment to breaking the eight. We can best break the eight if we share one another’s burdens, forgive one another when we have been wronged, and work assiduously to support the government’s initiatives to improve the plight of the Ghanaian people and encourage them to recognize the enormous progress the nation is making under this government.

Looking at the wider perspective, Okyeame Baffour Akoto and many of our ancestors set enormous examples of selflessness, patriotism, and vision that are all around us now. We feel glad honoring Baffour Akoto’s memory today because of those unselfish and patriotic efforts. The political climate in Ghana was highly turbulent during their tenure there in the years leading up to and immediately following independence. The infamous Preventive Detention Act allowed people to be imprisoned without being aware of their crime back then. People like Baffour Akoto might have comfortably remained in the palace and let the politicians engage in their allegedly dishonest political activities. Instead, he opted for the riskier course of action of aiding in the situation’s recovery to ensure that the country would experience true

Thankfully, the philosophy and values that Baffour Akoto, J B Danquah, S D Dombo, K A Busia, and several other members of our tradition upheld are now the cornerstone of our democratic society. This society was further strengthened by J A Kufuor’s outstanding leadership, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is carrying on this tradition as president of the Republic.

The remembrance of individuals like Baffour Akoto must serve as a beacon guiding us in the direction of patriotism for societal advancement. Let us all reflect on what we can do to advance the advancement of our beloved country for our generation and those who will follow us as we pay tribute to Baffour Akoto, the man whose vision, charisma, respect, and devotion brought together great minds from all walks of life to create the UP Tradition, which has since created the New Patriotic Party.Live long and prosper for Okyeame Baffour Osei Akoto’s memory. Long live Ghana, and long live the New Patriotic Party.
