Over 1,000 cocoa farmers at Hwidiem in Ahafo Region, have expressed concern about the non-payment of their bonuses or premiums by a company called Touton-Eliho Ghana Limited.
They have called on the government to intervene in the matter.
During a press conference in Hwidiem, Sampson Awal Mohammed explained to ADOM NEWS that their bonuses or premiums, totaling Gh. 470,000.00 or 4.7 billion old cedis, expected to be paid by Touton-Eliho Ghana Limited, a cocoa buying company, according to the agreement, have not been paid.
This non-payment is adversely affecting their lives and cocoa farms.
According to him, COCOBOD and other credible organizations convinced them (farmers) to sell their cocoa to the said company because it is reliable and law-abiding.
They can’t understand why, for years, the company has refused to pay their deserved bonuses, which would help improve their lives and cocoa farms.
Another Cocoa Farmer, Nana Yaw Marfo also indicated that if their bonus is not paid within one week time, they will summon the company to court, so the managers must take note.
Meanwhile, Adom News Reporter, Sammy Asare spoke with the managers of the company who affirmed that it owes the farmers but in due time they will tell their vision of the story.
