President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to the Ghanaian electorate to place their trust in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and support its Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming elections on 7 December 2024.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for the second phase of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange on Friday, 29 November 2024, President Akufo-Addo described the upcoming elections as a pivotal moment for the nation. He stressed the importance of sustaining the country’s progress and completing ongoing developmental projects.
“I urge you to place your confidence in the New Patriotic Party. A vote for the remarkable Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma Central, Jefferson Sackey, is a vote for continuity, growth, and a brighter future for our nation,” the President said.
The second phase of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, which was inaugurated during the event, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve commuting times in the capital. Akufo-Addo highlighted that the newly completed project would not only reduce travel costs but also enhance productivity by ensuring a smoother flow of goods and services.
“This project is a catalyst for economic vibrancy in Accra. It will streamline the movement of goods and services, thereby reducing the cost of doing business and attracting crucial investments to the region,” he remarked, adding that it plays a critical role in the government’s broader vision for Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso Boakye, also a member of the NPP and Member of Parliament for Bantama, described the interchange as a major milestone in improving urban mobility. He noted that upgrading the existing roundabout to a three-tier interchange would address one of Accra’s most pressing traffic challenges.
“This ambitious project will improve traffic flow between key arteries, including the Ring Road West and the Nkrumah Interchange, as well as the Ring Road West Extension towards Abossey Okai,” Asenso Boakye explained. He called on Ghanaians to take pride in the project and ensure its maintenance for future generations.
The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange is a critical junction within the city’s road network, linking several major routes including the Kaneshie Mallam Road, the Ring Road West, the Ring Road West Extension, and the Graphic Road. The project, which began in 2019, was designed to alleviate traffic congestion in urban Accra.
The three-tier interchange was constructed in two phases: Phase I, completed in November 2020, focused on the second tier of the bridge, while Phase II, completed in 2024, included the ground level and the third tier. The project was executed by QGMI UK, with FAS Consult Ltd serving as the supervising consultant. It was funded by the Government of Ghana in partnership with the UK Export Finance (UKEF).
