Some passengers have expressed deep concerns over defective trolleys still in use at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
As a traveler who uses the airport frequently, Mama Joe said she had a very unpleasant experience using a trolley during one of her trips.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Aburokyire Nkommo, she said her suitcase tumbled on the ground after a trolley she was using snapped out of her hand.
Mama Joe told show host Kwaku Amankwatia, popularly known as Akonta Joe, that she escaped unhurt and had her luggage intact.
She subsequently reported the incident to the airport staff but no action was taken.
Another traveler, Nana Wireko who was also on his way to Rotterdam corroborated Mama Joe’s claim, stating that, he came across several defective trolleys at Terminal 3.
“I had the encounter both at the arrival and departure and I believe we must treat this with urgency to ensure the safety of passengers and convenience,” he lamented.
The defects, according to them, include broken handles, wobbly wheels, and non-functioning brakes, a situation which has clearly reached a critical point.
They have therefore called on the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) to roll out a regular maintenance schedule to ensure trolleys are in good shape.
Mama Joe, who works at Koln Airport in Germany, proposed payment for the use of trolleys to cater for their maintenance.
Though some passengers may raise issues, the safety of users will be assured if the trolleys are in good shape.
“Charging for trolley use encourages passengers to return the trolleys after use. This leads to better availability of trolleys for other passengers and encourage users to handle the trolleys more responsibly. Revenue from these fees can be used to maintain and repair trolleys regularly, ensuring they are in good working condition,” she suggested.
