The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has expressed gratitude to the individuals and institutions that supported victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage in his constituency.
He was particularly grateful to entrepreneurs from the Volta Region who contributed enormously to provide some relief to the over 18,000 victims of the flood, caused by the controlled-spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
Speaking at the 2nd Volta Young Entrepreneurs Summit in Ho, Mr. Ablakwa asserted that the thoughtfulness and generosity of the donors exhibited solidarity and unity among the people of the region.
“I am eternally grateful, particularly to the people of this region. Yes, there’s a disaster that hit the region, but it hit some of us more, North Tongu was the epicenter, particularly Mepe. But I saw in our people a certain solidarity, a certain oneness, a certain unity”, he said.
He indicated that more than 250 companies, of which “a lot is owned by illustrious sons of the Volta Region”, presented relief items to the victims through the office of the MP, alone.
He outlined the housing project spearheaded by First Sky Group, owned by Eric Kutortse who is from Kpando, and the reconstruction of affected roads by Engineers and Planners Company Limited, owned by Ibrahim Mahama, whose mother is from the Volta Region, as major interventions in the area.
Mr. Ablakwa therefore lauded the conscious promotion of the culture of entrepreneurship in the country, which plays a significant role in the development of the country.
“It emphasizes the point that you cannot rely on the government for everything, no country does that. There are times when you will need entrepreneurs to step in to fill in the gap.
“Imagine if we didn’t have entrepreneurs from the region and if we did not consciously promote the culture of entrepreneurship, the next time we need entrepreneurs or we need successful people to rally, to solidarize, and to come to the aid of the vulnerable, who are we going to rely on?”, he quizzed.
