Wesley Grammar SHS continues to make historic feats after qualifying for the quarterfinal stage of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

Contestants of the school, which struggled to qualify for the national tournament since 2017, did not only break their 6-year jinx but have also secured a seed spot for the school.

Meanwhile, Yilo Krobo is also making a debut appearance in the quarterfinals.

It was a moment of fulfillment when Wesley Grammar SHS booked a seat at the preliminary stage of the 2023 National Science and Maths competition after missing out for six consecutive years.

The school, located in the heart of Greater Accra’s Dansoman, had since 2017 not qualified to experience the national tournament.

They beat four other competitors at the Greater Accra regional qualification to make their return to the competition.

The coordinator for the quiz team, Solomon Ofori Yeboah says the past years have been unpleasant.

“We qualified in 2015 and made our first appearance at the nationals in 2017, but we were kicked out by GSTS. Since then we have been in the wilderness. It was really devastating when we put in so much effort but yielded nothing,” he said.

Coming into the national competition, the team left no stone unturned as they fixed their gaze on rewriting the school’s history.

It came as a surprise to many when the school beat Holy Child School at the preliminary stage of the competition and also sent Swedru SHS and Tema Methodist packing.

For the contestants, Richmond Ofoe and Francis Adonteng, their hard work paid off.

“I contested when I was in form 2 but I lacked confidence then. So whenever I had an answer to a question I was reluctant. However, I realised the schools I competed with were just like me. They only had confidence. So I put in efforts to be more confident and here we are today,” Richmond said.

Their determination is unwavering.

“Our least stage would be the semifinals,” he added.

The school clashes with 2023 Ashanti regional champions, Anglican SHS-Kumasi and St. Louis SHS in the quarterfinal stage of the competition.

“We are not perturbed about the contest ahead. We will put in our best and we believe God would crown us victors,” Richmond emphasised.

Meanwhile, Yilo Krobo is making their debut appearance at the quarterfinal stage after they kicked out St. Hubert Seminary and Fijai SHS at the one-eighth stage.

For the two schools, their achievement today affirms their ability to overcome mountains with unabated perseverance.
