The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has exuded confidence in the party’s prospects for success in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Mr Mohammed highlighted the positive outcomes of the NPP orphan primaries, emphasising that the results signify the party’s readiness to retain political power.
He expressed optimism about securing a majority of seats in the 2024 elections, attributing this confidence to the caliber of candidates selected in constituencies without NPP MPs.
The Deputy General Secretary further commended the delegates for their role in choosing candidates who, in his view, demonstrated competence and a strong connection with the people.
He acknowledged the internal nature of the contest, stating that in such situations, there are no losers but rather a selection process.
“There was no winner and there was no loser at the end of the polls because this is an internal contest and in an internal contest, there’s no loser; there’s a selection,” Mohammed explained.
He emphasised the need for unity within the party, urging all contestants to rally behind the selected candidates as a form of cooperation after the competition.
Mr Mohammed stressed the responsibility of national, regional, and constituency officers to ensure inclusivity and cohesion within the party.
He recognised the upcoming elections as a crucial opportunity for the NPP to break the eight and secure a victory in the political landscape.
“This is our second attempt at breaking the eighth, and this time around, we’re going to make it. We’re very sure of winning political power, but we need a majority in the House of Parliament,” he asserted.
On Saturday, 321 aspirants vied for a slot in 111 constituencies described by the NPP as ‘orphan’ because the incumbent MP is of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Delegates were given the mandate to select individuals who would contest in the 2024 parliamentary election on the ticket of the party.
