The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi is rallying party delegates to vote against Members of Parliament (MPs) experiencing a decline in popularity within their constituencies.
This rallying call precedes the imminent party primaries, where decisions on candidate selection will carry significant weight in shaping the NPP’s strategy for the crucial 2024 general election.
In discussions with journalists, Wontumi stressed the critical importance of delegates endorsing candidates who maintain a strong connection with their constituents.
He expressed concerns about potential repercussions, including a decline in votes for the ruling party, if candidates lacking grassroots support are fielded.
Wontumi further advised MPs facing dwindling popularity to consider voluntarily withdrawing from the upcoming contest.
He highlighted the broader interest of the party and its members as a central factor in making such decisions.
“Even if you know that as an MP you reduced [NPP] votes in the 2020 elections then it is better you thank your people and leave the scene because we don’t want to endorse an MP who will go and lose a seat again,” he said.
“[As a delegate] if you know your MP has become unpopular, vote him out because this is not about money or friendship. Just vote for the popular candidate because we need majority MPs in parliament”, he further stressed.
