Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

A new survey on the upcoming NPP presidential primaries has revealed which of the five contenders is viewed by party delegates as possessing the leadership qualities required to lead the party.

According to Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana, which released the findings of its latest survey on the NPP race, 69.7 per cent of NPP delegates believe former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia possesses the requisite leadership qualities among the five contestants.

Among delegates interviewed, 69.7 per cent rated Dr. Bawumia as having the best leadership qualities, while 22.5 per cent chose Kennedy Agyapong. Dr. Bryan Acheampong followed with 6.0 per cent, while Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum and Kwabena Adjei Agyapong each recorded less than one per cent.

Among non-delegates in the general population, 52.9 per cent believed Dr. Bawumia possessed the best leadership qualities, while 31.2 per cent chose Kennedy Agyapong. Dr. Bryan Acheampong polled 7.9 per cent, with the remaining candidates recording single-digit figures.

In the main survey question, which asked NPP delegates about their preferred candidate to lead the party in 2028, Dr. Bawumia emerged as the clear favourite with 67.8 per cent support.

Demographics

According to Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana, the survey included responses from more than 5,000 NPP delegates and over 13,000 citizens (non-delegates). The organisation said this reflected a highly inclusive and diverse national sample, with strong representation across all age groups, particularly those aged 26 to 55, and across urban, peri-urban and rural areas, with 41 per cent of respondents from rural communities.

The sample also covered a range of educational and employment backgrounds, religious affiliations (74 per cent Christian and 22 per cent Muslim), and all major ethnic groups.

“These demographics ensure that the results reflect the views of a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society,” the report added.
