Martin Amidu Warns of Political Desperation Threatening Ghana’s Democracy

Martin Amidu, a prominent Ghanaian politician and former Attorney General, has raised serious concerns over the escalating political conflict between the majority and minority parties in Parliament.

This tension has intensified following a recent Supreme Court ruling that reversed a decision by Speaker Alban Bagbin to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

In his article, “The Politics of Desperation for Political Power in Ghana,” Amidu states, “Both major parties are attempting to manipulate public sentiment to secure votes, often at the expense of the truth and constitutional integrity.”

The Supreme Court’s stay of execution halted Bagbin’s ruling, affecting Members of Parliament Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central). This decision has ignited heated debates and accusations of political maneuvering from both sides.

Amidu cautions that this struggle for political dominance poses a significant threat to the 1992 Constitution, warning, “If left unchecked, this desperation risks reigniting past political conflicts that could destabilize our democracy.” He emphasizes the need for political leaders to learn from history and avoid practices that could lead to chaos and unrest.

He calls on stakeholders to prioritize Ghana’s constitutional values and the well-being of its citizens over personal ambitions. “The 2024 elections must focus on integrity, policy, and serving the interests of the people, rather than the unrestrained pursuit of power,” he asserts.

Amidu, who served as Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor from 2018 until his resignation in 2020 due to alleged political interference, is recognized for his unwavering stance against corruption. He gained prominence for introducing the term “gargantuan” in discussions about accountability, particularly during the high-profile Woyome scandal investigation.
