Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama says the government is returning the country to the days of power crisis.
Parts of the country have been experiencing frequent unannounced power outages, raising concerns among electricity consumers.
Mr. Mahama is envisaging should the NDC resume power, the government will inherit power cuts, a problem the party had earlier resolved.
“Today dumsor, they are kicking it like a football because he wants to kick it over the line to 7th January 2025 and hand the problem over to someone else. We resolved it before they came to office”, he said.
He further commented on the persistent hike in electricity tariff.
“They have added VAT to the bill, COVID levy, NHIA levy, GETFUND all on electricity bills and that it going to send the cost of your electricity bills up. Already there was a 29 percent increase, 19 percent increase then they tried to fool us with a four percent decrease and now it is going up again”, he added.
The NDC flagbearer was speaking at a stakeholder engagement as part of the “Building Ghana Tour” of the Volta Region.
Many businesses continue to suffer due to the hike in tariff.
John Mahama believes a reduction of government expenditure could help reduce excessive taxes that have resulted in hikes in prices of goods and services.
“The hike in the bills is making Ghana a difficult place to do business. All business people are complaining. Yet because of the mismanagement of the President, his cousin and Vice President, it has plunged all of us into a difficult situation”, he emphasised.
Meanwhile, the former President has assured the NDC will restrain itself from starting new projects, but seek to complete stalled ones.
“Instead of finishing the projects they inherited, they have started new ones they know they can not complete. Whatever little resources we come and meet, we will send it to completing the abandoned projects”, he added.
The first day of the “Building Ghana Tour” of the Volta Region ended at Dodze where a townhall meeting was held.
