Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School, which came under government’s administration in 1963 to offer holistic education to girls in and across the Ashanti region, is decrying critical shortcomings in infrastructural development.
Teaching and learning, especially of Science in the institution is becoming challenging, leaving teachers and students to deal with recurring struggles.
Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School currently has a population of 3,200.
The second cycle institution is battling insufficient accommodation that could absorb only 20 per cent of teachers, leading to teachers trekking miles to school daily.
Similarly, Science students do not have access to a decent laboratory to improve teaching and learning.
The headmistress, Selina Anane Afoakwa is appealing for support.
“The school urgently needs more security personnel to ensure effective and adequate security since the current number of four is highly inadequate. We would be very much grateful to see more improvement in our drainage system, and more importantly, the tarring of all the road networks. This will not only uplift the image of the school but also make life more comfortable.
“The school needs a new Science Laboratory to boost the teaching and learning of Science. Out of 1,200 students who were admitted this year, about 280 students offered General Science. Most of our staff live outside campus. In this regard, supervision and control of students is left on the shoulders of only a few resident staff. We are therefore appealing to all stakeholders to come to our aid in the provision of more staff bungalows and living quarters,” she said.
Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School’s 60th anniversary celebration saw alumni and guests from across the world gather to plan for the progress of the school.
The anniversary was themed: “60 Years of Educating the Girl Child: Our Story, Our Achievements, Our Future”.
Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso Boakye, assured of future cooperation to tackle the concerns raised by the school.
“We celebrate a legacy of excellence, empowerment and resilience that Kumasi Girls Senior High School has edged into the educational landscape. I’ve cultivated a better relationship with management to better appreciate your concerns. Another part of the road which is untarred had been given to a contractor to be on-site very soon. With collective efforts, Kumasi Girls Senior High will see future transformation,” he said.
In a bid to recognise the hard work and dedication of students and teachers, awards were presented to outstanding individuals during the anniversary celebration.
