US Vice-President Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination, surpassing the delegate threshold required for the candidacy. Harris, who is the first Black and South Asian woman to become a major US political party’s White House nominee, expressed her honor and determination as the virtual roll call continues ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago later this month.
Kamala Harris has officially clinched the Democratic presidential nomination following a decisive vote of party delegates. The announcement comes after President Joe Biden, who had been the presumptive nominee, stepped aside and endorsed Harris. She secured the support of 2,350 delegates, surpassing the threshold necessary for the nomination.
Harris, in a telephone statement, expressed her gratitude and resolve. “We believe in the promise of America and that’s what this campaign is about,” she said. “We are in this, we are on the road and it’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to get this done.”
The virtual roll call, which began on Thursday and concludes on Monday, has seen 99% of the 3,923 delegates pledge their support to Harris. This unprecedented nomination process, driven by the need to comply with ballot access laws in Ohio, reflects a shift from traditional party conventions.
At 59, Harris is the first Democratic nominee from a western state in the party’s nearly 200-year history. Her political journey from San Francisco district attorney to California attorney general, and then US senator, has been marked by significant achievements.
Although Biden had secured a commanding position in the Democratic primary, his departure followed pressure from within the party and a challenging debate performance against Donald Trump. The virtual nomination process was implemented to avoid ballot access issues and preempt potential exclusions in Ohio.
Harris is anticipated to announce her vice-presidential running mate by Monday. Meanwhile, her campaign has gained momentum, raising over $310 million in July, significantly surpassing Trump’s campaign haul. The strong fundraising reflects Harris’s growing influence and the Democratic Party’s commitment to securing the presidency.
