Jamaica’s renowned sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has opted to withdraw from the 100m event at the Paris 2024 Olympics despite qualifying from her heat and missing the semi-finals.
Fraser-Pryce, a five-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 100m, has chosen to conclude her illustrious career on a high note by focusing on other opportunities.
The 37-year-old sprinter aimed to extend her remarkable Olympic medal streak with a fifth consecutive appearance on the podium in the 100m event.
Her decision to withdraw paves the way for potential additions to her medal collection as part of Jamaica’s esteemed women’s 4x100m relay team, where her experience and leadership could prove invaluable.
Fraser-Pryce, who holds a personal best of 10.60 seconds, ranking her among the fastest women in history, initially gained global recognition as a member of Jamaica’s victorious 4x100m relay team at the 2007 World Championships.
Having announced her retirement earlier this year, Paris 2024 marks her final Olympic Games, marking the end of an era in competitive athletics.
