Some Senior High Schools in the Ashanti and Bono East regions are missing out on practical experience in their study of information communication technology (ICT) programme.
Students in two of such schools, Nkoranza SHTS and St. Jerome SHS, take turns to access a congested computer room and go through the curriculum with a few functioning old computers.
St. Jerome Senior High School has a student population of over two thousand and five hundred taking ICT studies in a poorly ventilated room with a few functional computers.
“The teacher comes with his laptop to teach, and gives us notes yet, we still fail. In my class we fail a lot because not everyone gets to experience practically what is being taught,” a student complained.
The situation was similar at the Nkoranza Senior High Technical School, where a limited number of outdated computers, accompanied by exposed electrical wiring, served as the only means for ICT learning for over three thousand students.
Headmaster of Nkoranza Senior High School, Collins Adu-Yeboah, is excited the students will be exposed to advanced ICT equipment.
He worriedly explained that the previous state of the lab did not encourage the learning the ICT.
“The room previously was occupied by obsolete computers. But now the quality of computers we have gotten, the electrical wiring and environmental condition, everything is in place,” he said.
As an intervention, Hello World Organization led by Evans Adusei Jnr, handed over fully-furnished computer laboratories to Nkoranza Senior High Technical School and St. Jerome Senior High School.
Thirty new smart computers, projectors, a printer copy machine and power supplies, with improved internet connectivity, have been installed in each of the schools.
The physical environment of the labs has been overhauled with painted rooms, tiled floors, new fans and air conditioners, security doors, and windows to improve teaching and learning.
The gesture by the Hello World Organization aims to equip underprivileged students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the current digital age.
The gesture forms part of the organisation’s social responsibility of giving back to deprived communities.
Founder and CEO of Hello World Organization, Evans Adusei Jnr, said the initiative will bridge the gap in IT studies and foster growth of the local technology sector.
“The vision is to bridge the educational gap, through equipping these young minds with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
“This will cultivate a generation of innovators, problem solvers, and ethical technologists who will contribute to the sustainable development and global competitiveness of Ghana,” he said.
Beneficiaries showed appreciation for the positive impact the ICT Centers will have on their educational experiences.
Headmistress of St. Jerome Senior High School, Mary Boakye, believes these computers will enhance the elective ICT we study. In terms of research for both teachers and students will be easy.
