In the spirit of Christmas, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has extended a heart-warming gesture to the flood-affected communities in the North Tongu District of the Volta region.
The Port of Tema organised a special Christmas celebration, bringing hope and joy to hundreds of families who have been grappling with the aftermath of floods in the region.
The North Tongu District has been grappling with the devastating consequences of flooding in recent times. The adverse effects of the floods have been felt across communities, leaving residents in dire need of assistance to rebuild their lives.
In response to this pressing need, the GPHA, a key player in Ghana’s maritime industry, took it upon itself to bring some festive cheer to the affected areas.
On December 20, 2023, a delegation from the GPHA, led by the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager, Abena Serwa Opoku-Fosu visited several communities in the North Tongu District and distributed the items to the residents with the help of the North Tongu MP, Samuel Ablakwa Okudzeto.
The team came bearing not only the warm wishes of the season but also hundreds of relief items to help alleviate the challenges faced by the flood-affected residents.
The relief items distributed included essential food supplies, clean water, clothing, blankets, and other necessities to support the affected families during the festive season. The GPHA also organized a festive gathering in each community, complete with Christmas carols, decorations, and a hearty meal, creating a joyous atmosphere amid the challenging circumstances.
Mrs Abena Serwa Opoku-Fosu expressed the GPHA’s commitment to social responsibility, stating, “As an organization deeply rooted in the Ghanaian community, we believe we must stand by our fellow citizens during difficult times.
“Christmas is a season of giving, and we wanted to ensure that these communities could experience the joy and warmth of the holidays despite the challenges they are facing.”
She noted that they needed to help the flood-affected residents at a particular time of the festive season to put smiles on their faces and also help them enjoy Christmas without having to worry about foodstuffs.
She pledged the organization’s commitment to ensuring that their needs are met when they are called upon to help.
The gesture was met with gratitude and appreciation from the residents of the North Tongu District, who welcomed the GPHA’s support with open hearts. Local leaders and community members alike praised the Authority for its proactive approach to Corporate Social Responsibility and its dedication to making a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.
The Christmas initiative led by the GPHA, as highlighted by the North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is seen as a commendable example of how corporate entities can contribute to community well-being and embody the true spirit of Christmas.
Mr Ablakwa noted that the timing for the donation by the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority was a perfect one considering the hard times and challenges faced by the residents.
He thanked the team for their generosity and urged others to emulate their kind gesture by also donating to the affected communities.
Mr Ablakwa noted that as the holiday season continues, the GPHA’s efforts will undoubtedly leave a lasting and positive impression in the hearts of those who have benefited from their generosity in the North Tongu District.
