Germany and the European Union is committing 16 million euros to support the development Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through the EU-Ghana Pact for skills project. The EU-Ghana pact for skills project is a joint action partnership between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and European Union in collaboration with the Government of Ghana.

The project which is aimed at empowering Ghana’s workforce through enhanced skills development and employment opportunities is funded by the German government with 10 million euros with a six million euros support from the European Union.

The pact is to support the Government of Ghana’s strategy to boost TVET as a tool to address the skills gap and reduce unemployment in the country.

Speaking at the launch which took place at the Ministry of Education, Sector Minister, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum called for the inclusion of STEM in the development of technical and vocational training. 

“The intersection between TVET and STEM is something we should be concerned about. Training the youth to compete in the new industries emerging. We want a TVET of innovation. “

In his keynote address, the German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull stated that Germany is committed to supporting Ghana in achieving sustainable economic growth through job creation by equipping the youth with the needed skills to compete in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.

“Ghana is one of the priority countries for German development aid abroad. This is crucial for the future of the young people and improving their employability”.

The EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly noted that the European Union will offer the needed financial and technical support to ensure a sustainable TVET sector in Ghana.

“We will strengthen the capacity of TVET providers to offer quality training. We will also enhance the private sector integration into the TVET system.  We must ensure Ghanaian youth receive quality education and skills needed to thrive.”

The EU Pact for Skills project will develop the competencies of government actors and equip teachers with practical educational skills with a key focus on green education and the digital transformation of the TVET sector.

The Country Director for of GIZ, Regina Barbosa stated that GIZ on behalf of the German Government has supported Ghana’s quest to improve socioeconomic development through the Ghana Skills Development Initiative.

The four-year project will be executed by GIZ Ghana in cooperation with the commission on TVET, Ghana TVET Service and other private and public sector players.
