Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has voiced strong backing for current Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin’s decision to refer parliamentary matters to the Supreme Court.
This move has ignited debate within political circles, but Bonsu asserts it was necessary to clarify legal interpretations.
“The Supreme Court is the ultimate authority when it comes to interpreting the law,” he said in an interview on Sompa FM, emphasizing the need for judicial guidance in complex legislative issues. He commended Afenyo Markin for this bold step, particularly in response to challenges posed by recent decisions from Speaker Kingsford Alban Bagbin.
Bonsu noted that the Speaker’s actions have occasionally complicated parliamentary proceedings, necessitating legal examination. “The decisions made by the Speaker have adversely affected our work, and it is crucial that we seek clarification from the Supreme Court,” he remarked.
He also criticized those condemning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership for turning to the judiciary, stating that fears over the separation of powers should not hinder the pursuit of justice. “If we feel the Speaker is overstepping his authority, we must take action,” he asserted.
Reflecting on past events, Kyei-Mensah highlighted instances where he believes Bagbin has wielded excessive authority, often undermining the majority’s position.
“This is not just about today; it’s a pattern we have observed,” he explained, adding that the Speaker’s decisions have consistently favored specific agendas, leading to frustrations among the majority.
He underscored the importance of maintaining checks and balances within Ghana’s political system, concluding, “It’s our duty to uphold the law and ensure that no one, not even the Speaker, operates above it. Seeking the Supreme Court’s guidance is not only appropriate but essential for the health of our democracy.”
