The European Union (EU) and the Government of Ghana joined hands today to inaugurate 224 state-of-the-art on-farm housing units.

These modern housing units, located on the sprawling plantation of Golden Exotic Limited (GEL) in Kasunya/Asutsuare, Shai Osoduku District of the Greater Accra Region, mark a significant milestone in the quest to improve the lives of Ghanaian farmers.

Designed with an emphasis on functionality and sustainability are a testament to the commitment of the Banana Accompanying Measures Programme, a collaborative effort aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector while enhancing social welfare within farming communities.

Enhancing Farmers Well-being

For farmers and their families, these newly constructed housing units offer a haven of comfort and convenience. Equipped with modern amenities, including energy-efficient electricity systems, a water treatment plant, and a community center, the houses provide a comfortable living environment.

Access to decent and affordable housing is pivotal in creating a conducive atmosphere for farmers to thrive and contribute effectively to the agricultural sector. By providing these housing units, the Banana Accompanying Measures Programme takes a significant step toward addressing pressing issues of rural poverty and homelessness within the farming community.

Mr. Olivier CHASSANG, Vice President of Compagnie Fruitiere in Ghana (the parent company of Golden Exotics Limited), hailed the initiative as a major milestone in the social development of the company and a shining example of international cooperation.

European Union Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Irchad Razaaly, emphasized the importance of the partnership in empowering local communities. He underlined that the housing units stand as a testament to the EU’s dedication to uplifting farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector, not just by providing shelter but by enhancing overall quality of life.

Ghanaian Banana export sector, while ensuring it’s environmental and socio-economic
sustainability in the long run.”

Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, expressed deep gratitude for the EU’s support and highlighted the transformative impact of the program. She stated that, the housing units will unlock potential and enhance the agricultural productivity of the farmers.

“This is an embodiment of the shared vision for rural development and poverty reduction, which lies at the core of our collaboration.”

The completion of the 224 housing units signifies a long-awaited yet significant milestone in the journey toward creating a thriving farming community in Ghana.
