In a world where altruism seems scarce and many individuals often expect monetary rewards for their efforts, Smile for Child Ghana is defying the norm by recognising and celebrating the selflessness and dedication of young girls who have participated in their ‘I MADE IT’ program.

This initiative is designed to empower and support girls from Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana, fostering their confidence, self-esteem, and educational aspirations.

Dorcas Naana Nusi, the Executive Director of Smile for Child Ghana, expressed her concern about the prevailing mindset, stating, “these days, it is very rare to have people volunteering for a worthy cause without asking for money. Most people, even if monetary rewards are given, will abscond if it is not to their satisfaction.”

She acknowledged that when people hear the term NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), they often associate it with financial gain, a perception she attributes to societal norms.

However, Smile for Child Ghana aims to break this stereotype. The ‘I MADE IT’ program, initiated in November 2017, focuses on providing mentoring and financial support to girls in SHS, with a strong emphasis on character development.

Over the years, the program has successfully mentored two batches of students, with 18 out of 24 girls reaching its culmination.

The program’s journey includes various modules, community service, educational trips, and character-building lessons. While the first cohort had the opportunity to embark on an educational trip to Accra and visit various institutions and tourist sites, subsequent cohorts faced challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and sponsorship limitations.

During the recent culmination ceremony at St. Monica’s SHS in Asante-Mampong, six exceptional girls were recognised for their dedication and resilience.

They are Emmanuel Narkwor Nartey, Georgina Tifiretey, Lydia Obeng Antwi, Regina Boafowaa, Sandra Frimpomaa Owusu, and Vanessa Apaliya. These students received certificates and laptops from Smile for Child Ghana, marking their success in character lessons, vacation literacy skills, community service, and educational trips.

Madam Dorcas, while commending the students, emphasised the importance of “making it” to the next level, where Smile for Child Ghana can provide further support for postgraduate education or career placement.

She encouraged the students to continue refining themselves in all aspects of life and to remain resilient in the face of challenges.

Dr. Rev. Dr. Okyere Korankye, Principal of St. Monica’s College of Education, lauded the program for its positive impact on the community, particularly in environmental protection through community service.

He expressed his pride in the students’ resilience and determination, highlighting how the ‘I MADE IT’ program has risen to the challenge with passion and dedication.

In a world where personal gain often overshadows selfless acts of kindness, Smile for Child Ghana’s ‘I MADE IT’ program stands as a shining example of how organizations can nurture character, empower young girls, and inspire them to excel in both their personal and academic lives.

These exceptional students serve as a beacon of hope, reminding the public of the importance of supporting worthy causes and nurturing responsible citizens.
