Emmanuel Bedzrah intensifies bid to transform Volta Region into ICT hub

The Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has intensified his bid to transform the Volta Region into an information and communication technology hub.

He said this aims to ensure that the jurisdiction’s human resources are equipped with the requisite technological skills to fit into the ever-evolving global village and tap potentials of the fourth industrial revolution.

Mr. Bedzrah made this known at the opening of the 2025 edition of the Ho West Annual Tech Fair, which was hosted by the Awudome Senior High School in Tsito.

“The vision is to make Ho West, for that matter, the Volta Region into a real ICT hub within the West African Sub Region, where multinational companies outsource jobs for the youth to sit at home and work for good money. I have a very good feeling that this is achievable,” he said.

“The ultimate objective for this initiative is to empower young people with the relevant technological skills for 21st-century jobs,” he said.

Scope of training

He disclosed that about 200 participants made up of teachers and students were drawn from the 18 constituencies across the Volta Region to participate in the 3rd edition of the Ho West Annual Tech Fair.

“I have already benefited from the 3D printing, and so, job creation has started from today,” adding that the Ho West District Assembly has hinted at engaging the participants to map out the district to help in property rate collection.

He apologized to those who had applied but were not admitted due to limited resources and indicated that they would have the opportunity to participate when the online training platform is developed.

He further indicated that plans are underway to offer training during weekends and vacations to ensure a larger number of people benefit from it.

“Over 500 people have subscribed to join this training, but we can only take 200 people. For those who applied but didn’t get the opportunity to join this batch, the team is working hard to develop an online platform that will enable them to participate as well”, he explained.

Partnership and logistics

He lauded the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for helping him achieve his vision of building the capacity of people across the region in digital knowledge.

Mr. Bedzrah said 100 laptops have been procured to help participants have hands-on training to enable them to assimilate what they would be taught during the training.

He lauded his team in the constituency for doing a yeoman’s job in coordinating and organising the Tech Fair which would impact generations.

The Leader of the team from KNUST, Makafui Bedzrah said the participants will undergo a 2-week intensive free training in virtual reality technology, drone piloting and mapping, 3D modeling and printing, coding, website development, and entrepreneurship among others.

He said a special drone had been developed equipped with enough energy to fly about 120 meters to help with land mapping.

He underscored their commitment to ensure the training transforms into digital job creation to curb unemployment and promote economic growth.

Artificial Intelligence

The Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Edem Kofi Kpotosu, underscored the significance of artificial intelligence and entreated the youth to embrace and use it in their everyday life.

He urged participants of the training to harness their potential and form groups to set up companies and provide services in the technological space.

“From now on, I want to believe that all of us have acquired a skill out of this training to use for ourselves, our communities, districts, municipalities, and the region as a whole”, he said.

Appreciation

The Ho West District Chief Executive, Francis Profer Dusey, lauded the initiative adding that it aligns with the government initiative to train one million youth in coding.

He advised the beneficiaries to identify the program as a window to prosperity and take a keen interest in every detail as it would contribute to transforming their lives in the immediate future.

“To the facilitators, I am aware you are here with your designed curriculum, but I want to say it will be appropriate if you can listen to the concerns of your learners. Combine the two, so that at the end of the day, the objectives you set for this festival will be achieved”, he said.
