Swimming as part of aquatic sports in Ghana takes a positive twist following the introduction of Ghana Swimming Pathway project by Desmond Amponsah, the Project Lead and Interim Head of Ghana Swimming Coaches Association, with the goal dubbed, “Build Structure from Grassroots to Greatness in Ghana Swimming”.

The project, initiated in collaboration with Ghana Swimming Association (GSA), Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program (ICECP), brought together several swim coaches (26) and young swimmers (22) to a two-day workshop at Achimota Senior High School on Saturday, March 7, 2026, and at University of Ghana Swimming Pool on Sunday, March 8, 2026, respectively.

Besides, the Ghana Swimming Pathway project began with series of education workshops, designed to introduce Ghanaian coaches to the principles of Long-Term Athlete Development and physical literacy.

These workshops attracted coaches from different clubs to discuss how swimming training in Ghana can move beyond early specialization and instead focus on the gradual development of skills, movement competence, and enjoyment of the sport.

These sessions, introduced coaches to concepts such as Active Start, Fundamentals, and Learn-to-Train, which emphasize age-appropriate training methods that support both performance and lifelong participation in sport.

The purpose of this initiative is to ensure every Under 12 swimmer enjoys being in the sport of swimming, and to gain support to sample through other sports as well.

Coaches are to be the drivers; driving the swimmers to their destination, and with the involvement of parents to ensure the athletes reach their full potential.

The program began with a pilot session and was first held online via Zoom on December 13, 2025.

Speaking to the media, Desmond Amponsah, GSP Project Lead said, “We are going to make sure every kid enjoys being in the sport of swimming, not just swimming but every sport you find yourself in.

“You make sure you enjoy it. Coaches are going to be the drive way; driving the swimmers to their destination, and we are also going to involve parents in this project to make sure that we all support the development of the athletes so they get to where they want to get to”.

Several swim clubs participated in this aquatic program which includes, African Sharks, Alraad Swim School, Ghana BlueFins Swim Club, Gh Dolphins, Jay Swim and Fitness Club, Legon Sharks, Marlins Swim Club, Swim Right, and Tema Seals.

Coaches have expressed gratitude for the opportunity to align their training methods with internationally recognized development models.

According to them, this program provides practical tools that can progressively improve the way young swimmers are trained in Ghana.

Meanwhile, Ghana is set to host the Africa Aquatics in May this year as over 40 African countries will arrive in the country to compete in several events at the Aquatic Complex in Borteyman, Accra.
