Kofi Tonto, a political aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has clarified that the proposal for Ghanaians to acquire smartphones for GHC 1 or GHC 2 monthly instalments if elected needs to be more understood.
Dr Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP, recently announced plans for his administration to facilitate smartphone purchases on credit, aiming to enhance digital accessibility across Ghana.
Addressing concerns on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (23 July), Tonto emphasized that Bawumia’s proposal is not just about promising smartphones for GHC 1 or GHC 2 outright. It’s about leveraging a national credit scoring system and integrating it with telcos to enable affordable monthly smartphone payments, a potential game-changer for digital accessibility in Ghana.
Tonto explained, “Dr Bawumia proposed bridging the digital divide and ensuring widespread smartphone access and internet penetration. He mentioned a scenario where smartphones could be purchased on credit, with monthly payments as low as GHC 1 or GHC 2, using an instalment plan.”
He further criticized the social media backlash, stating, “Our opponents are misinterpreting his intent to denigrate and malign. They’ve focused on the GHC 1 or GHC 2 figure, missing the broader context of his proposal.”
