There is a rallying cry for help to be sent to communities along the Volta Basin that have been affected by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

Areas such as Anloga, Sogakope, and Mepe, among others, have been submerged by floodwaters, displacing thousands.

This is a result of the controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA) due to the rising levels of the Volta Lake.

Over the past week, the situation has worsened, with the government and various stakeholders mobilising relief items to ameliorate the plight of the displaced victims.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, explained that as his office does its best to secure more help, a section of Ghanaians has risen to the occasion.

According to him, many of them have stated that they were moved by the vivid coverage of the disaster on Joy FM as the situation unfolded.

He was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, October 17.

“Let me thank you. Because of your program, I’ve received a number of calls from people who have said they are listening to you. And because of the broadcast and how you are really highlighting the plight of my people.

“This morning, the Ghana Tankers Association called me, stating that they are on their way here with truckloads of relief items. I’ve also received a call from the Christian Council of Ghana. They are also on their way here,” he explained.

He added that the “Catholics have also called, stating that they are also mobilizing.”

That was not all. He said he had received notification from the Humanitarian department of the Church of Latter-Day Saints “and many of them are tracing the source of information to your program.”

“So, I want to really thank you on behalf of the chiefs and people of North Tongu. We’re really grateful to Joy FM for the tremendous work you’re doing to highlight the plight, and it’s really yielding results.”

“So, I’m sure in a few hours, you’ll see the pictures and the coverage from what the Tankers Association is coming to do and what the Christian Council will be doing later this afternoon.”

The legislator further called for more support from entities to help restore the livelihoods of the affected residents.

Electricity to residents in Sogakope and its environs has been cut as a result of flooding of some of the power distribution substations.

But GRIDCo assures that “power will be restored as soon as the situation improves”.
