The Bono Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, has called on various professional bodies in the public sector to reconsider their decision to join a nationwide strike organized by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
In a press release dated October 3, 2024, Abronye advised unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and the Nurses and Midwifery Council, to distance themselves from the strike.
Abronye argued that these professional groups, which are made up of highly educated and intelligent individuals, should refrain from following the lead of TUC General Secretary Mr Joshua Ansah, whose motivations, he claims, are questionable.
He urged the unions to assess the situation critically and not allow themselves to be drawn into actions that may not ultimately benefit their members or the country.
The nationwide strike, which is set to disrupt essential services, is part of organized labor’s ongoing demands to the government.
However, Abronye’s statement suggests that the motives behind the strike may not align with the best interests of the public sector workers involved.
He encouraged these professional bodies to dialogue and explore other avenues to address their concerns without taking industrial action.
