In the quiet of a home in Techiman Traa, two-year-old Hiba Duul Osman fights a silent, exhausting battle with every breath she takes. Her smile can light up a room, but her heart, burdened by a congenital defect, is failing her.

Hiba was urgently referred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where the diagnosis was confirmed: a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a hole between the heart’s chambers. Specialist Pediatrician Dr. Jacqueline Agyapomaa Assibey of Holy Family Hospital explains the danger.
“This abnormal opening forces the heart and lungs to work much harder. Oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood mix, depriving the body of the oxygen it needs,” says Dr. Assibey. “This is why children like Hiba have rapid breathing, get tired easily, and struggle to feed and grow.”
The prognosis without intervention is dire. “The heart weakens. The risk of serious complications, including heart failure, rises dramatically,” Dr. Assibey states. However, she offers a beacon of hope: “But with timely surgery, the defect can be closed. The heart can heal. This child can have a normal, healthy life—she can run, play, and grow. This surgery isn’t just an option; for Hiba, it is a lifesaving necessity.”
An Impossible Mountain
That lifesaving surgery comes with a staggering price tag of GH₵120,000. For Duul, a local teacher, this sum represents an impossible mountain.
“I am a teacher. I want to save my daughter, but I cannot afford this,” he pleads. “I am appealing to the public, to everyone with a kind heart… please, help us save our little Hiba.”
