Your non-involvement enabled us to speedily approve our estimates – Ayariga trolls angry Minority

Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has taken a swipe at the Minority Caucus, saying their withdrawal from proceedings on Tuesday enabled the Majority side to swiftly approve all budget estimates with unusual dispatch.

The approvals were done under what effectively became a high-security sitting, after parliamentary marshals, supported by some Majority MPs, blocked Minority members from entering their side of the chamber to disrupt the process.

The Minority had earlier staged a protest in the centre of the floor over the declaration of the Kpandai seat as vacant, resulting in a near-scuffle.

But despite the disorder, the Majority pushed through with the adoption of the budget allocation report, a key step in the approval process of the 2026 fiscal policy.

The Minority had maintained that until the Kpandai issue is resolved, they will continue to obstruct government business.

They insisted the Speaker acted prematurely in directing communication to the Electoral Commission regarding the seat, despite ongoing legal processes at the court.

In a pointed jab, Ayariga thanked the opposition MPs for inadvertently smoothing the way for government business.

“Mr Speaker, let me use this opportunity to thank my friends in the Minority. Their action has enabled a very speedy approval of the various estimates… We thank them very much for their non-involvement. It has enabled us to move with dispatch and to approve all our estimates,” he told the House.

Ayariga praised the Speaker for keeping proceedings on track despite the tension, describing the sitting as a test of parliamentary endurance.

“In spite of the effort to undermine the execution of government business, you have kept the ship moving, and we have been able to successfully approve all the estimates we scheduled for today.”

He further assured Ghanaians that the Majority would continue to uphold democratic principles, insisting that although they had the numerical strength to overpower the Minority, they opted for restraint.

“Mr Speaker, we have the numbers. We could have done certain things, but we knew that this Fourth Republican Constitution is a product of the National Democratic Congress. No constitution in Ghana has endured like this one.”

Drawing a biblical analogy, Ayariga suggested the Minority had attempted to bait him into a confrontation.

“David succeeded because Goliath allowed himself to be lured into using tools that David was more adept at. I could have used my numbers to vanquish this small Minority, but if I had fallen into their trap, I wouldn’t have succeeded in approving my estimates. So I refused to use their tools.”

Tuesday’s sitting, marked by shouts, marshals on alert, and a walkout, ended with the Majority securing all the approvals it sought, while the Minority vowed to intensify resistance over the Kpandai seat saga.
