World Cup 2026: MP urges Otto Addo to reserve slots for home-based players in Black Stars squad

Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has called on Ghana coach Otto Addo to allocate a quota of spots in the Black Stars squad for home-based players ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, setting aside about five slots for local players would not only motivate those on the domestic scene but also help improve the financial standing of clubs.

His comments come as Ghana begins preparations for the global tournament after qualifying with a 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

“There is a possibility that some players will be at the tournament but will not kick football,” he told JoySports.

“Maybe 21 [players] based strictly on selection criteria then we deliberately look at maybe four, five local players who have clearly distinguished themselves.

“Our local clubs need the revenue. We need that money to develop football in general.”

Under FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme, an estimated $355 million has been earmarked to reward clubs whose players feature at the World Cup, a scheme that could significantly benefit local teams if some of their players make the final squad.

Coach Otto Addo has until the latter part of next year to name his final list of players for the tournament.

Meanwhile, the official draw for the 2026 World Cup will take place on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
