World Children’s Day: Focus on early learning for every child - Gender Minister

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, in collaboration with Plan International Ghana, commemorated the 2025 World Children’s Day with the official launch of the national Revised Early Childhood Development Policy.

Observed under the theme, “My Day, My Right: Investing in Early Childhood, a National Priority”, the commemoration underscored the pivotal role of Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) in fostering comprehensive growth, safeguarding the well-being of children, and promoting lifelong learning for those aged 0–8 years.

Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey emphasised that while Children’s Day is an important occasion to celebrate the young population, it should not be the only time they receive attention.

She stressed that children must be consistently supported, guided, and provided with access to quality education and opportunities that foster their growth and development throughout the year.

As part of the activities, the National Children’s Parliament convened, providing child representatives with a formal platform to deliberate on critical national issues.

During an interview with the Country Director for Plan International Ghana, Constant Tchona indicated that the programme is designed to reinforce a clear understanding of children’s fundamental rights, especially their rights to education, protection, health, and meaningful participation in their communities.

“The World Children’s Day celebration emphasises and amplifies the rights of the child, such as the right to health, education, the right to protection and the right to voice to be able to participate and the realisation of all the rights,” he said.

Beatrice Laari Dammigu, representative for the West Mamprusi Children’s Parliament constituency, said the programme had given children the platform to openly share their dreams and the challenges they faced in their communities.

She revealed her own aspirations of becoming an engineer, a movie producer, and a seamstress, highlighting how the initiative inspires young people to envision and pursue their goals.
