The Executive Secretary of the Global Security for Africa Research and Good Governance (GLOSARGG), Francis Ahovi, has called on the country’s security agencies to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and vigilance as political tensions have escalated in recent times.
In a statement referencing the ongoing case involving the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, Mr Ahovi, a seasoned security expert, cautioned that deliberate attempts could be made by certain elements within the political landscape to provoke unrest and threaten the country’s stability.

“I urge Ghana’s security institutions to remain highly vigilant in the face of potential provocation by the largest opposition party,” Mr. Ahovi said.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) two days ago.
This came shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra. He had been at the CID headquarters for questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining and mining in forest reserves, and entering the forest reserve without authorisation.
His arrest has since created political tension in the country.

Mr Ahovi warned that as the political atmosphere becomes increasingly charged, there may be calculated efforts aimed at unsettling the peace that Ghanaians have long cherished.
“As the political climate intensifies, calculated efforts may be made to destabilise national peace and security,” he noted.
He therefore urged security forces to exhibit unwavering impartiality and discipline throughout the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
“I therefore call on our security forces to maintain utmost professionalism and impartiality throughout the term of John Dramani Mahama. This disciplined posture is not only vital for preserving public confidence, but may also prove to be the most effective strategy to neutralise any underlying agenda to incite instability,” he added.
Mr Ahovi’s remarks come at a time when Ghana’s political terrain is witnessing heightened scrutiny and increased public debate over the role of law enforcement in politically sensitive cases.
He emphasised that safeguarding national unity must remain the collective priority of all stakeholders, especially as the country moves closer to a crucial electoral season.
