Wontumi TV apologises to Mahama, NDC over unfounded helicopter crash claims

Wontumi TV, owned by Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued an unreserved apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over allegations made by one of its presenters linking the President to the recent fatal military helicopter crash.

The remarks, made by presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare during a broadcast on Saturday, August 9 suggested, without evidence, that the President had a role in the tragedy, which claimed eight lives, including the Defence and Environment Ministers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, Wontumi TV described the comments as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.” The station emphasised that the claims did not reflect its views, policies, or editorial stance.

“As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the statement noted, adding that disciplinary measures will be taken against the presenter. Management further said editorial guidelines had been reinforced to ensure on-air content is based solely on verified facts and credible information.

The apology comes amid heightened scrutiny of Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, after the National Communications Authority (NCA) suspended three of its radio stations, 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi, over regulatory breaches. These included the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter sites.
