A Deputy National Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, holds an optimistic outlook on the party’s prospects for the 2024 general elections.

He believes that with a united front and collective effort, the NPP can maintain power and continue its mission to bring relief to the people of Ghana.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Asante extended congratulations to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his victory in the presidential primaries held last Saturday.

He urged party members to rally behind the Vice President, supporting him in his endeavour to break the eight year cycle in Ghana’s political history.

Already, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called on other aspirants and party members to unite to achieve the NPP’s ambition of maintaining power in the 2024 election.

According to him, his fellow contenders participating in the process have deepened the democratic credentials of the NPP, adding that “their energy, time, engagement and resources have contributed to energizing the base of the party and has prepared us all for the crucial battle of 2024.”

Dr Bawumia, delivering his inaugural speech on Saturday, November 4, noted that he is determined to work with all aspirants as well as party supporters “to achieve the party’s ambition of breaking the 8.”

“That ambition requires the participation of all the aspirants including my good friend Kennedy Agyapong who wanted to give me a showdown today” he said.

Certified election results revealed that Dr Bawumia secured 61.43% of the votes, with Mr Agyapong as his closest competitor, garnering 37.41%. Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Addai-Nimoh received 1,459 and 731 votes, respectively.

A total of 192,446 delegates participated in the presidential primary, with a turnout of 94.63%. While Dr Bawumia’s victory was expected, he fell short of the 80% target set by his campaign team.

Dr. Bawumia’s win is historic, marking the first time a non-Akan leader will represent the NPP in a general election. He has been the running mate of President Akufo-Addo since 2008.

The 2024 election is anticipated to be highly competitive, with both Dr Bawumia and former President Mahama considered formidable candidates. The outcome will depend on several factors, including the state of the economy, campaign strategies, and voter turnout.

Furthermore, all other candidates have pledged their support to Dr. Bawumia.
