A little over two weeks ago, Black Stars Coach Otto Addo named his squad for the four-nation Unity Cup tournament between Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. This tournament took place in London.

The tournament provided a valuable opportunity for Coach Otto Addo to assess the strengths and weaknesses of his team and try out new players as part of his quest to build a strong, formidable team.

The squad saw a few debutants like Mohammed Fuseini and Caleb Yirenkyi, quite a number of returnees like Kwame Opoku and Felix Afena Gyan, Abdul Samed, some usual names like Jordan Ayew and Lawrence Ati Zigi and a number of huge omissions like Antoine Semenyo, Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus.

Several players stood out and impressed, and will hopefully earn themselves a spot in the team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September.

Players Who Deserve a Spot in the Black Stars

Caleb Yirenkyi – The defensive midfielder’s versatility was on full display as he played as a right back and delivered a commendable performance. He was very difficult to dispossess and unable to dribble past. His tackling and ball-winning prowess was also too notch. His ability to adapt to different positions makes him a valuable asset to the team.

Aside from being a defensive-minded player, he provided a lot of attacking depth, especially against Nigeria, and nearly scored the equaliser when he came at the receiving end of a cross in the second half.

Mohammed Fuseini: Mohammed Fuseini, who had a standout season with Union St. Gilloise, played a crucial role as they won the Belgian League title, replicating his club side’s performance on international duty.

He went on to score the 3rd of the 4 goals against Trinidad in his second appearance for the Black Stars.
The prolific goal-scoring winger’s performances in the Unity Cup were impressive, and he proved himself to be a valuable addition to the team. His ability to score crucial goals and provide assists makes him a player to watch out for.

Christopher Bonsu Baah: The young player’s performances in the absence of Kamaldeen Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, and Mohammed Kudus were outstanding. His speed, agility, and movement into the box make him a promising talent. In both games, he mostly hugged the touchline and was quick with his movements into the box.

His wide positioning resulted in him widening the opposition’s defensive line to create space for other runners to dissect. His notable moment was when he took on two defenders against Nigeria on the right flank and put a low-placed shot that went straight into the goalie’s arms.

Brandon Thomas-Asante: The Coventry City striker’s impact off the bench was significant, and he proved himself to be a clinical finisher. His ability to test the opposing goalkeeper with powerful shots makes him a valuable asset to the team.

He pulled one back for the Black Stars in the 70th minute as they lost to Nigeria by two goals to one.

There were some commendable performances from players like Razak Simpson, Ebenezer Annan, Lawrence Agyekum, and Abu Francis.

These players have shown that they have the talent, skill, and dedication required to represent the Black Stars at the highest level. Maintaining them in the team will provide consistency and stability, which is crucial for success in the World Cup qualifiers. Additionally, these players have shown that they can work well together as a unit, which is essential for achieving team goals.

Addo will have a tough decision to make with regards to selecting his squad for the World Cup qualifiers in September, but based on their performances in the Unity Cup, these players deserve a spot in the team.
