The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has reiterated its position, indicating that there is nothing about Edward Dua Agyeman, a former Board Chairman of the Ghana Audit Service, that indicates that he has been appointed to the rank of a professor.

GTEC has therefore asked him to provide information on the institution that appointed him to the rank of professor and when that was done.

According to GTEC, Edward Dua Agyeman claims that he was appointed as a lecturer in 2004, although he obtained his master’s degree in 2009 and questioned whether he was then lecturing with a first degree in 2004?

Again, GTEC has indicated that he completed his PhD at Warborough College in 2013 and also questioned whether he was appointed a professor by the same institution in 2014, or whether he was ever promoted to the rank of senior lecturer or associate professor.

“As a senior lecturer, you moved to the Emile Woolf College of Accounting, Holborn, London. Which institution promoted you to the rank of a senior lecturer? Emile Woolf College of Accounting is not a university and cannot, therefore, appoint you to the rank of senior lecturer.

“Furthermore, the Commission would like you to note that the only verifiable information about you at Warnborough College is when you graduated with your PhD in 2013. There is nothing about your appointment to the rank of a professor.

“The Commission, therefore, requests formal submission of verifiable documentation from the appointing authority to confirm your professorial appointment.

“Note that the Education Regulatory Bodies Act of 2020 (Act 1023) mandates the Commission to investigate any individual suspected of using suspicious academic credentials, including professorship.

These were contained in a letter dated June 27, 2025, addressed to Edward Dua Agyeman, written and signed by Prof Augustine Ocloo, Deputy Director General of GTEC, on behalf of the Director-General.

The letter was a reaction to Edward Dua Agyeman’s explanation that he earned his “professorship.

GTEC had earlier, in a letter dated June 17, 2025, formally directed Edward Dua Agyeman to provide proof of his professorial rank or cease using the title immediately.

GTEC had expressed concern over Agyeman’s continued use of the title “Professor,” stating that it may lack proper academic validation. The Commission warned that such usage undermines Ghana’s higher education standards.

It formed part of a general move by GTEC to sanitise the misuse of academic titles, including ‘unearned’ doctorate and professorial titles.

RE: “I EARNED MY PROFESSORSHIP”- EDWARD DUA AGYEMAN

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has taken note of your recent media and online publication in response to our request for documentary evidence of your appointment or promotion to the rank of Professor by a recognised institution.

Rather than providing the requested documentation, your response focused on detailing your credentials and personal achievements. Please be reminded that the Commission is not interested in a public debate but rather expects a direct and verifiable response to its specific request.

The Commission would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to some glaring inconsistencies in your publication, which necessitate further clarity. You indicated in your publication that:

  • You were appointed as a lecturer in 2004, although you obtained your master’s degree in 2009. Were you then lecturing with a first degree in 2004?
  • You completed your PhD in Warborough College in 2013 and were appointed a professor by the same institution in 2014. Were you ever promoted to the rank of senior lecturer or associate professor?
  • As a senior lecturer, you moved to the Emile Woolf College of Accounting, Holborn, London.

Which institution promoted you to the rank of a senior lecturer? Emile Woolf College of Accounting is not a university and cannot, therefore, appoint you to the rank of senior lecturer.

Furthermore, the Commission would like you to note that the only verifiable information about you at Warnborough College is when you graduated with your PhD in 2013. There is nothing about your appointment to the rank of a professor. The Commission, therefore, requests formal submission of verifiable documentation from the appointing authority to confirm your professorial appointment.

Note that the Education Regulatory Bodies Act of 2020 (Act 1023) mandates the Commission to investigate any individual suspected of using suspicious academic credentials, including professorship.

In light of this, we respectfully request that you cease using the title of “Professor” in public or holding yourself as such until the appropriate evidence has been submitted and duly verified by the Commission.

GTEC reiterates its earlier position on this matter and expects your cooperation. We await your prompt response. We would be grateful to receive your response by Thursday, 10th July 2025.
