New Zealand offers the perfect combination of landscapes, with unimaginable beauty, a favourable climate, rich culture, and communities full of incredible people. With so much to see and do there, you can see why the country attracted more than 3.2 million international visitors in 2023.

Whether you are going there to sightsee, visit relatives, or even forego adventure and focus on leisure, we’ve got some tips on what to expect when travelling to New Zealand as a Ghanaian below.

Visitor Visa Requirements for Ghanaians

Ghanaian citizens can’t travel without applying for a visitor visa, just like many other international travellers. Most people need a NZeTA or a specific visa. The New Zealand Visitor Visa for Ghanaians allows a person to remain in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months during an 18-month period. You don’t need to stay for the entire 9 months, however.

There are a few requirements for obtaining the visa, including:

  • Valid Passport (with at least 3 months left before expiration)
  • Proof of Financial Support
  • Onward Travel
  • Health and Character
  • Additional Documentation for Families

The Culture

The people of New Zealand are generally friendly and welcoming. They love their country and are often happy to share their customs.

We recommend being as friendly as they are, returning their happy hellos and polite interactions. Feel free to ask questions about the country and their culture. You might also like to learn about the Māori and have a Māori experience like bathing in the waters of Ngawha Springs, visiting the Mitai Māori village, and so much more. Here is a look at some of the best Māori experiences.

The culture is about having fun and making the most of life. You can do everything from tryRoyalPanda at an online casino to whitewater rafting down the Tongariro River. If you plan in advance, you’ll be able to make the most of every day.

Although it isn’t required, it’s always polite to leave a tip when you go out to eat.

Exploring New Zealand’s Natural Beauty

Its natural beauty is one of the top draws of New Zealand. We’d argue there isn’t a more beautiful country on earth; the scenery is nothing short of breathtaking.

Some of the must-see sights we recommend putting on your list are:

  • The geothermal areas of Rotorua
  • Milford Sound
  • The cities of Auckland and Wellington
  • Waiheke Island
  • Tongariro National Park
  • Mount Cook

Try everything from hiking and skiing to water sports to get the full New Zealand experience.

Accommodations and Travel Options

There are a lot of accommodation and travel options, so we’ll keep this vague because it depends on where you’re staying and how much you want to travel within New Zealand.

You’ll find upmarket hotels and inns, ecological lodges, holiday parks, and the AirBnb rentals that are quickly reshaping the hospitality industry. There’s everything you could ask for; you just need to look for a place within your budget in the areas you plan on staying. One thing we would recommend is booking your accommodations well in advance.

When it comes to transportation options, there are reliable bus services, and Auckland and Wellington also have major subway systems for visitors without cars.

Keep in mind that New Zealanders drive on the left side of the road; this may take some getting used to.

Weather Across Seasons and Packing Tips

New Zealand’s climate varies throughout the year. Here’s a summary of the seasons:

  • Summer (December to February): Temperatures range between 20°C and 30°C in summer.
  • Autumn (March to May): The temperature in autumn drops to approximately 20°C in March. By May, the average temperature is 10°C to 25°C.
  • Winter (June to August): The winters are not too extreme. South New Zealand has quite harsh winters, especially in the mountainous regions. If you want snow, go to Queenstown.
  • Spring (September to November): The temperature in spring in New Zealand is similar to autumn, but expect more rain.

General Packing Tips for All Seasons

You should always pack for the season, but here are some essentials we think you should pack regardless of the time of year you visit:

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Clothes for the season
  • Good footwear
  • Portable power bank
  • Reusable water bottle

A trip to New Zealand will be an unforgettable experience. For many people, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you in awe. Plan in advance to make the most of it!
