Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed support for the government’s efforts, highlighting the level of cooperation that the minority has extended since the President started nominating officials for key positions.

Afenyo-Markin highlighted that this is the first time in Ghana’s democratic history that the minority has facilitated the confirmation of government nominees in record time.

“From day one, when Mr President started ferrying his nominees to this House, we have given this government our utmost cooperation,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He added “Records will show that this is the first time in our democracy that the minority has extended such cooperation, allowing nominees to be confirmed in record time.”

Afenyo-Markin also pointed out his unprecedented move of making an application under Order (3), a step that, according to him, has never been taken by any previous Minority leader in Ghana’s history.

“Indeed Mr Speaker, I am on record to have made an application in this house under order(3). This has never happened by any minority leader in the history of our democracy,” he noted

“We believe in constructive criticism. We are not here to disrupt any government business, frustrate them, or undermine them,” Afenyo-Markin continued.

He added “Both parties have been in government and opposition before, and we know that disruption is not the way to win power in 2028.”

Meanwhile, the Minority leader has taken full responsibility for the chaos that erupted during the vetting of some ministerial nominees last week.

The vetting session, which was marked by heated exchanges and disruptions, led to the Speaker establishing a special committee to investigate the matter.

Upon a bi-partisan plea however, the Speaker lifted the suspension on Tuesday, February 4.
