Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, says the government is currently assessing the Ghana Air Force’s operational needs as part of efforts to maintain a safe and reliable fleet, including the presidential aircraft, which remains grounded in France.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Genfi explained that the review is not limited to the presidential jet but also covers other aircraft that have been out of service for some time.
“We are currently assessing the operational needs to ensure that we have safe, reliable, and effective air assets for national and presidential duties,” he said.
“Many of our helicopters and jets are down, and this discussion includes the possibility of acquiring new aircraft for the Ghana Air Force.”
His comments come after reports that Ghana’s presidential jet, the Falcon 900EX, has encountered new technical faults during ongoing repair works in France. The aircraft was initially grounded due to a corroded fuel tank, but further complications have delayed its return to Ghana.
The Deputy Minister, who recently briefed Parliament on the issue, said the Defence Ministry will make decisions guided by fiscal responsibility and the national interest once the assessment is complete.
“We are going to go through due process, and Ghanaians will be adequately informed when the decision is made — which of our air assets we are retiring, which ones we are bringing back, and which new ones we may acquire,” he noted.
The review comes amid renewed public debate over the maintenance of the presidential jet and the broader condition of Ghana’s military aircraft, with concerns about cost, transparency, and operational efficiency taking centre stage.
