The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue with the Ministry of Health but insists that it will not entertain any renegotiation of matters already agreed upon.

This stance follows the nationwide strike action initiated on 4 June 2025 by nurses and midwives, in protest against the government’s failure to implement provisions outlined in their 2024 Collective Agreement. These include allowances, incentives, and improved conditions of service.

In response to the industrial action, the newly appointed Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, appealed for calm and called on all parties to engage in constructive dialogue.

However, the GRNMA has maintained that while it remains open to discussions, it will not revisit issues that were already resolved in prior negotiations.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Monday, 9 June, the GRNMA Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Jefferson Asare, reiterated the association’s position.

“We are ready to meet. If we receive a letter now, we will move anywhere they want us to go. But for renegotiation, we are not ready,” Mr Asare asserted, signalling a firm refusal to revisit settled matters.

Mr Asare further noted the disparity in the health sector, pointing out that nurses and midwives are the only group whose agreed-upon conditions of service have not been fulfilled.

“In the health ecosystem, it is not only nurses who have problems with the conditions of service. But we are the only group whose conditions of service have not been implemented,” he explained.

The ongoing strike has significantly disrupted healthcare delivery nationwide, leading to growing concern from stakeholders and the general public.

Many are urging the government and the GRNMA to find a swift and amicable resolution to restore normalcy in the country’s health facilities.
