We’re engaging the Transport Ministry over GRTCC’s proposed 20% fare increase - GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it is engaging the Ministry of Transport over the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council’s (GRTCC) announcement of a 20% increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Friday, August 8, 2025.

Reacting to the development on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, August 5, Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, expressed surprise over the fare adjustment, insisting the GPRTU had not been consulted.

“What we are doing now is that the leadership of GPRTU is engaging the Transport Ministry, because we normally don’t just come out with a transport fare increment,” he said.

“Anytime we want to do an increment, together with the GRTCC, we go to the Transport Ministry and then we have an agreement.”

He explained that as of Tuesday, efforts to engage the Ministry had not materialised, but that engagement is expected to happen on Wednesday, August 6.

“Even today, the leadership was trying to get in touch with the Transport Ministry, but it couldn’t hold. So I believe by tomorrow, the leadership of GPRTU is meeting the Transport Ministry to talk about this to find out from them whether the GRTCC consulted them or if there had been any engagement,” he said.

Mr. Amoah warned that the lack of coordination could spark confusion among drivers and commuters if one group implements new fares and the other does not.

“Because the drivers and the passengers out there don’t know which vehicle belongs to the GRTCC and which belongs to the GPRTU… it will bring a lot of confusion.”
