Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be broken by its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He called on party members to rekindle their commitment and work tirelessly to reclaim power in the 2028 polls.

Addressing delegates at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium, Mr Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the disappointment felt by the rank and file of the party but urged unity and renewed energy going forward.

“We cannot, we must not allow 2024 to become the year that destroys the NPP,” he said.

“We must become a party of Ghana, talking to Ghana. Our constituency executives must master every polling station, our polling stations chairpersons must know every voter, our electoral area coordinators must understand every community’s dream,” he charged the party members.

“We cannot rebrand ourselves through better slogans; we must rebrand ourselves through better results and strong character,” he added.

The NPP lost both the presidency and its parliamentary majority in the 2024 elections.

The then opposition National Democratic Congress secured a return to power, with its presidential candidate, John Mahama, overwhelmingly winning the mandate and the party clinching a comfortable majority in Parliament.

Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that defeat must not breed despair but rather inspire strategic rebuilding.

He encouraged party structures at all levels to remain active and forward-looking with the aim of winning the 2028 polls.
