Former Bahamian professional tennis player Roger Smith has expressed his commitment to supporting the growth of tennis in Ghana, describing the opportunity to give back as “a blessing.”
Speaking at the opening session of the A10 Africa Tennis clinic in Accra, Smith said, “Building has always been a blessing. Like Katrina said, through the sport of tennis, it’s always been something that just wakes you up. And you know when you do something right, because you’re going to get the best out of it.”
Smith, who is part of a delegation leading a two-day clinic for coaches and young players, emphasized the importance of giving back and building lasting relationships.
“Giving back to Ghana, helping and assisting the federation and the coaches, and hopefully a long-term relationship is a great thing,” he said.
“Hopefully we can leave these coaches and the federation with some great experience in their lives. It’s whatever the goal is—opportunities for these kids—and that’s great to assist in that.”
He also expressed appreciation for the chance to be involved and promised continued support in the future. “We can always work together. And I know Katrina and myself will always, always be available,” Smith said.
“So whenever you want any kind of help, we will gladly jump on that flight deck. Please don’t hesitate to invite us back.”
Roger Smith represented The Bahamas at the 1992 Olympic Games and reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 96 in 1988, establishing himself as one of the Caribbean’s top tennis players of his era
