Member of Parliament for Weija‑Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, is sounding the alarm over unannounced power outages for several days, plunging homes, clinics and small businesses into darkness and leaving families and patients stranded in his constituency.
In a strongly worded statement released on 17th April 2025, the MP urged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and the Ministry of Energy to “take immediate and decisive action” to restore reliable electricity and warned that constituents are prepared to seek redress in the courts if the crisis persists.
According to Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Weija‑Gbawe has borne the brunt of the national “dumsor” crisis. “Communities here have been hit harder than any other part of the country,” the MP lamented, noting that some neighbourhoods endured unplanned outages lasting more than four days straight.
He pointed to the severe disruption of essential services from life-saving treatments interrupted at local clinics to pupils missing vital school hours and expressed disappointment in the lack of prior notice or communication from ECG and GRIDCo.
“I wish to bring to the urgent attention of relevant authorities the persistent and unannounced power outages (dumsor) that have plagued our constituency over the past few months.”
In his appeal, the second Deputy Minority Whip called on key power players, ECG, GRIDCo and the Ministry of Energy, to implement lasting solutions, from improved grid maintenance schedules to transparent outage communications to manage the situation.

He also hinted that, should these unplanned blackouts continue unchecked, residents may seek judicial intervention. “If decisive steps are not taken promptly, we will have no choice but to explore legal channels to compel reliable service. The people of Weija‑Gbawe deserve better.”
With the constituency’s economic activity stalling and public confidence waning, the MP’s pronouncement marks a significant escalation, making clear that legislative pressure alone may not suffice, and that the courts could soon be called upon to enforce Ghana’s citizens’ right to uninterrupted power.
