CAF Stadium security expert Nick Owusu has expressed disappointment with Ghana’s inability to address hooliganism over the years.
His comment comes on the back of a new low in the nation’s history, following the death of Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong during a Week 19 Premier League fixture against Nsoatreman in Nsoatre.
The incident is one of several that have transpired in Ghana’s top-flight, involving teams like Real Tamale United and individuals such as Coach Maxwell Konadu, who was beaten to a pulp in 2023.
“There are certain steps that needs to be taken as a country and we are not taking those steps,” Nick told JoySports.
“It has to do with the training and deployment of safety security coordinators for our matches. Our Premier League is the flagship product that we have as a country and as a product of the FA, on any given weekend, there are not more than eight Premier League matches going on and so there is the need to employ the same tactics that FIFA and CAF have been using to take care of this situation.
“If you typically have a safety and security coordinator on grounds [two-three days] before the match, this person would have intelligence on the sensitive nature on the match, he would coordinate with the ground police officers, there will be escort for the teams that are coming, there will be buffer and safe zones within the stadium and in some instances, you will even engage the fans.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has halted the Premier League after the fatal chaotic scene while Kotoko have also withdrawn from the competition “until justice is served.”
Meanwhile, The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Dampare held talks with Kotoko on the issue and called for a meeting with country’s football governing body on measures to clamp down on hooliganism at match centres.
