The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take swift action following serious corruption allegations against the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, May 13, Nana B described the situation as “a loud cloud of corruption” looming over President Mahama’s administration, urging the president not to “sweep this under the carpet.”

The controversy erupted after the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, accused Dr. Ayine of accepting GH₵500,000 to bribe the Parliamentary Appointments Committee during his vetting.

According to A-Plus, the money was allegedly solicited to ensure Dr. Ayine’s smooth approval as Attorney General.

In response, Dr. Ayine denied the bribery allegation and described the accusations as baseless, malicious, and entirely fabricated.

He stated that the claims made in a social media post by A Plus were not only false but laughable.

“If he can give truthful answers, then Ghanaians would know why he took to social media to do what he did. But let him be warned that in my hometown, we do not fear mud thrown at us.

“On the contrary, we walk into the mud to deal with the person doing the mud-slinging, and I am prepared to walk into the mud with A Plus,” he stressed.

However, he declined to take legal action, stating he had been advised to pursue the matter in court but preferred to focus on his responsibilities as mandated by the president.

On the back of this, Nana B criticised Dr. Ayine’s stance, stating that his refusal to pursue legal redress undermines his position as the principal legal officer of the state.

“If you have an Attorney General who is unable to respond to such serious allegations well, but then he says that he has been advised to proceed to court, but then he will not do so because he has been given a mandate by the president and he wants to concentrate, I find that weird,” he said.

“In your daily practice, you always go to court. If somebody says you are a thief, you are corrupt, you have gone for GH₵500,000 to bribe Appointment Committee so that you can sail through vetting and the person says that you [Attorney General] are a stupid fool and he’s going to reset your mind and you [Attorney General] are telling Ghanaians that you are not going to court, meanwhile the court is where you live.”

He added that the Attorney General’s suggestion to engage in “playing in the mud” was unbecoming of a constitutional officer with such a critical mandate.

The Attorney General can not say he wants to play in the mud. We do not want our Attorney General to dirty himself. That’s not what we want,” he stated.

Nana B emphasised the need for accountability and urged President Mahama to address the allegations decisively.

“We expect His Excellency the President not to sweep this under the carpet. These are serious allegations,” he added.
