One individual has suffered a broken wrist and another has been left with a swollen eye after military personnel allegedly brutalised them at Gbimsi, near Walewale in the North East Region.

The incident occurred as the military enforced a curfew in the area.

The victims have since been treated and discharged. This brings the total number of alleged military brutality incidents to 10 in the past week since the curfew was imposed.

Dr Tia Mahama Kabiru, the Member of Parliament for the area, condemned the military’s actions after visiting the victims and reiterated his call to the Ministry of the Interior to lift the curfew and offer respite to his constituents urgently.

In a new incident on Saturday evening, armed soldiers allegedly went on a rampage in Gbimsi, dragging people from their homes and assaulting them with mesh wires and the butts of their guns.

Mohammed Waliu, one of the victims, was attacked around 6.30 pm while standing outside his home. He now has a swollen eye and severe bodily pains.

His father, who witnessed the assault, called on the government to investigate the actions of the soldiers, warning that their continued presence and alleged illegal acts could endanger the peace of the region.

Daniel Yidana, a 42-year-old elder of the community, also accused the military of injuring his wrist.

He explained that he was attacked by soldiers while walking home just 30 minutes before the curfew started. Additionally, Samiatu Yussif reported that her store was invaded and vandalised by soldiers, and it took considerable pleading to avoid physical abuse.

Since the curfew was imposed on February 15 across several areas of the West Mamprusi Municipality, including Walewale, Loagri, Kukua, Gbimsi, and Wulugu, there have been almost daily reports of military brutality, resulting in two deaths and many injuries.

The latest incident in Gbimsi follows a similar raid on homes in Kukuazugu and Nayilifong, Walewale, and raises the total number of alleged incidents to 10.

Dr Kabiru condemned the military’s actions following his visit to the victims and urged residents to exercise restraint while assuring them that efforts were ongoing at the highest level to restore their freedom. He also emphasised the urgent need for the curfew to be lifted immediately.
