WAES demands investigation into alleged assault of journalist by Fire Service officers at Kasoa market

The West Africa Editors Society (WAES) has called for an urgent investigation into reports that some officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) allegedly assaulted a journalist at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 5, WAES said it was “appalled” by a viral video circulating on social media showing GNFS personnel reportedly attacking Samuel Addo of Class Media Group while he was covering a fire incident at the market. The fire broke out on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Mr Addo told WAES that he had returned to the market on Monday morning for follow-up coverage when around ten fire officers allegedly seized his phone and assaulted him, despite his identification as a journalist.

“I have lodged a complaint with the police and have been issued with a medical form to attend the hospital,” he said.

WAES stressed that the incident, if confirmed, is a serious violation of press freedom in Ghana.

Interim President Emmanuel K. Dogbevi condemned attacks on journalists, saying: “No democratic society should condone attacks on journalists, because doing so stifles journalism, kills transparency, and keeps everyone in the dark.”

The organisation urged both the Ghana Police Service and GNFS to investigate the matter thoroughly. While GNFS Public Relations Officer Desmond Ackah has reportedly stated in a Starr FM report that the officers only seized Mr Addo’s phone because he was recording an altercation without permission, WAES emphasised that journalists do not need prior approval to record events in public spaces.

“Members of the security services in Ghana ought to know by now that journalism is important for any progressive society, including Ghana, and stop attacking journalists who are only doing their jobs,” Mr Dogbevi added.

This latest allegation comes amid ongoing concerns about the safety of journalists in Ghana, particularly those reporting on emergencies and security operations.

WAES said incidents like these undermine Ghana’s free press environment and urged authorities to ensure accountability.
