VRA targets 1,800 megawatts power to sustain power export gains in five years

The Volta River Authority (VRA) says it is working to add up to 1,800 megawatts of power to Ghana’s generation capacity over the next five years, as part of efforts to maintain its strong position in the regional power export market.

Speaking to Joy Business at the Authority’s Annual Stakeholder Meeting, Board Chairman Jabesh Amissah-Arthur said the initiative forms part of VRA’s long-term plan to ensure growth, sustainability, and energy security.

“We are working to expand our generation capacity by about 1,800 megawatts over the next five years,” Mr. Amissah-Arthur said. “This is part of our broader plan to strengthen our export performance, improve reliability, and support Ghana’s growing energy needs.”

He added that the Authority is focusing on innovation, renewable energy, and strategic partnerships to enhance operational efficiency and meet the increasing power demands of both domestic and international markets.

The Chief Executive Officer of the VRA, Emmanuel Obeng Kenzo, also reiterated the Authority’s commitment to improving its operational performance and delivering on its mandate.

“We are committed to transforming the VRA into a more resilient and efficient power producer,” Mr. Kenzo stated. “Our focus is on improving existing assets, exploring renewable options, and ensuring long-term financial and operational sustainability.”

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Dr. Michael Kpessa Whyte, has encouraged the Authority to take advantage of recent macroeconomic gains to strengthen its position.

“The current stability of the cedi presents a unique opportunity for VRA to consolidate its gains,” Dr. Kpessa Whyte noted. “By leveraging this stability, the Authority can improve its financial performance and better position itself for growth next year.”

The Annual Stakeholder Meeting brought together key players in Ghana’s energy sector to review progress, share insights, and discuss strategies aimed at ensuring a sustainable and competitive energy industry.
