EC Plans Extensive Voter Registration to Ensure Comprehensive Electoral Roll
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana aims to register between 50,000 to 70,000 new voters in a three-day mop-up exercise, targeting individuals who recently turned 18 or missed the earlier registration period. This initiative is set to run from August 1 to August 3, 2024, and will be conducted at multiple designated centers across the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a mop-up voter registration exercise scheduled from August 1 to August 3, 2024. The goal is to register between 50,000 to 70,000 new voters, including individuals who have recently turned 18 and those who were unable to register during the previous limited voter registration period.
Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, detailed the plans at a recent press conference in Accra. He stated that the registration would take place at 268 District Offices, 26 Public Universities, and 41 Prison Centres across the country, with each center operating from 07:00 to 18:00 hours daily.
The registration process will be conducted entirely online, with the EC partnering with Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to ensure stable internet connectivity throughout the exercise. This effort follows the limited voter registration exercise held from May 7 to 29, 2024, which added 778,447 new voters to the electoral roll, comprising 408,332 females and 370,115 males.
Currently, Ghana’s provisional voter list includes 18,681,366 registered voters. The mop-up exercise is part of the EC’s broader strategy to create an inclusive voter register ahead of the December 2024 General Election, as stipulated by Regulation 2 of CI 91 As Amended by CI 126.
Mr. Tettey emphasized the rules for guarantors, who can support up to 10 individuals for registration. Those who have already guaranteed for 10 people during the last registration phase are not eligible to do so again in the mop-up exercise. Guarantors must ensure that those they vouch for are Ghanaian citizens, at least 18 years old, and meet all other registration criteria.
The EC has also invited political parties to send agents to observe the registration process, urging them to maintain professional conduct to ensure a smooth and incident-free exercise.
