The Electoral Commission has clarified that the purported fight between the Agona West Constituency Organizer of the New Patriotic Party and a member of the NDC’s Communications team in the constituency over the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise, had nothing to do with the Commission.

Media reports had suggested that, the NPP Organiser, Sam Toys, inflicted cutlass wounds on a member of the NDC during the limited voters’ registration exercise.

The unnamed NDC member was said to be in critical condition after the chaos that erupted between the two parties at the Agona West office of the Electoral Commission in the Central Region.

NDC’s Deputy Organizer in the constituency, Samuel Ametepey, who supposedly witnessed the incident, in an interview with Adom News expressed his disappointment, and further blamed the EC for the incident.

But the EC in a statement published on its Twitter handle on Monday, September 19, 2023, said the incident did not take place at its district office as suggested.

It clarified that the said incident actually occurred four hours after the EC’s registration at the district office in Agona West had closed.

The EC in the statement signed by its acting Head of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu, said the report filed by the Daily Graphic and the Daily Guide is erroneous and must be disregarded.

It further demanded that the two media platforms retract the reportage.

While condemning the NDC’s Deputy Organizer in the constituency, Samuel Ametepey for blaming the EC for the incident ‘when he knows very well that it had nothing to do with the EC’, the Commission said it has “noted calculated attempts by sections of the society to tarnish its image and credibility. This false allegation gives credence to this pattern” the EC noted.

Meanwhile, Agona West NPP Communication Director, Isaac Somuah has denied the allegations being levelled against his organiser.

“Toys did not hit the victim’s head with GoTa. Zion’s account is false, he was not present… It was a fight between the two people and they both crashed into a car’s bonnet. That is how come his head hit something and resulted in the wound,” he said.

“Toys also fell from the car onto the floor and they were separated,” Mr Somuah added.

He also dispelled claims that the NPP is being backed by police to hijack the registration process.

But the constituency’s NDC communication officer, Wahab Mukaila told journalists that his party is ready to defend itself if the police will not protect them.
